Earl Young Mushroom Houses
See it to believe it! Earl Young built houses from stones and boulders and the creativity in his mind. A self guided tour map available from the Visitors Center at 109 Mason St. More information and history available at the Harsha House Museum.
Earl Young's architecture is a one of a kind and unique sight not to be missed in Charlevoix. He was an architect, realtor and insurance agent, but interestingly he was never actually licensed as an architrect. Young's works are made mostly of stone, using limestone, fieldstone, and boulders that he found throughout Northern Michigan. The homes are creatively known as Gnome Homes, Mushroom Houses, or Hobbit Houses.
