This photo is NOT what the food looks like anymore. This is from years ago when I had a Steak and Morel mushroom burrito and it was the best burrito I've ever had. This past weekend we made our yearly voyage to the Red Mesa during the Morel Festival. I was so enthusiastic to get that burrito again. Well, strike 1 was the chips and salsa. They now charge for them which is no big deal, but the chips were chewy and the salsa was ice cold. The combo was terrible! Strike 2 was they no longer offer the Morel burrito but they will sell you a handheld steak burrito with a 12 dollar upcharge for morel mushrooms on the side. I opted to go for it and all I can say is 100% yuck! Terrible! I had to order burrito sauce which was terrible as well. Strike 3 was the rest of my family's food was terrible.as well. The final nail in the coffin was when they sat us down next to a table with 5 little screaming kids. They clearly had many more tables available but chose to put us in the Romper Room section. Will NEVER be back to the Red Mesa. You guys clearly have slid downhill and charge dearly for that garbage.

We’ve been coming to Red Mesa since they opened 28 years ago. Along with Young state Park (39 years) it was a high point of “up north”. Sadly no more for Red Mesa. Over priced entrees and margaritas, tough steak fajitas, and to top it off charging for chips and salsa because of the economy our waiter said. We eat Mexican four times a month and travel all over the country and have never been charged extra for chips and salsa. Obviously portion and quality control to enhance profits is managements mantra. Fond memories of the shrimp and bacon thing, the Brazilian steak, the waitress who heard one of say “who’s turn is it to pray” and she said would you like me to (and she did), the hat that I still wear are all the memories we’ll have going forward.

I wish I could give it a 10! I love Mexican food, but having visited many regions of Mexico for work over the years, I KNOW good Mexican food. And although Red Mesa does still have small American twists to their food, it is GLORIOUS! The carnitas, shredded chicken and shredded beef were all mouth watering. The beans and rice are also very flavorful. We had the 3 enchilada and 3 taco meals. The meats are so well seasoned. The portion size are great. The food is fresh and the prices are on point for the quality of food. We live in Gaylord and have been going to a local (better than average) Mexican restaurant, but this is our new go-to by far. We plan to try the Red Mesa in Boyne as well. The ambiance is on point and the service was good. Be sure to try Red Mesa; your money will be well spent!

Back in the area for the summer, first stop is always Red Mesa....big family favorite with several visits over the summer. We were seated immediately which is rare because they're usually quite busy. Very surprised with all the menu changes, no longer serving pork or ground beef, tortilla soup is gone, now charging for chips and salsa. A few other favorites no longer available. Two sided menu is wonky and difficult to read. The food we ordered was good but not what we came in for (pork tacos and tortilla soup) Not sure we'll return.

This is a family-owned and operated restaurant. During our visit, we had a few issues. Our soups were cold, and we had to send them back. We ordered our food, only to be informed later that they were out of some ingredients. When we got our newly ordered food, they gave my wife a medium-cooked steak instead of a well-done one. However, after all their issues, their service was excellent, they recovered nicely from all their mishaps, and they apologized sincerely. The manager and her daughter, our waitress, went out of their way and made a horrible evening good. Thank you guys.
