Run Off the Beaten Path

It’s time to get off the beaten path and explore the roads less traveled. Are you a runner looking for a new challenge, a new place to explore, or just a change of scenery? Whether you’re visiting Charlevoix for the first time, or a long-time resident, here’s a list of great running trails for every skill level.

1. Susan Creek Nature Preserve
For the trail runner, this beautiful nature preserve is just for you. Loop around a one-mile track of lovely hardwood timbers. The Susan Creek Nature Preserve offers runners an extensive trail system that is challenging.

2. Fisherman’s Island State Park
Located just south of Charlevoix, Fisherman’s Island State Park is a great hidden running course. The best time of year to visit this park’s trails are May and June. With 3.5 miles of trails, runners get a great trail system and breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. 

3. Little Traverse Wheelway
Are you training for a race or looking for an easy route to follow? The Little Traverse Wheelway is a good trail to train on. This path is geared for every skill level, offering runners an even running path. With amazing views of Lake Michigan, the Little Traverse Wheelway gives runners 23 miles of possibilities.

4. Lake to Lake Trail
One of Charlevoix’s newest trails, this crushed limestone trail connects Lake Charlevoix to Lake Michigan. This 4.3 mile (one way) trail is easy to walk or run. The Lake to Lake Trail is a great place for individuals who are beginning to run with its low impact and easy to navigate terrain.

5. Park Ave to Lake Shore Drive
Are you looking for a great and easy to follow four-mile loop located close to town? Beginning in downtown Charlevoix, follow Park Avenue from downtown, past Lake Michigan Beach and the mushroom houses, and veer right at the hospital. With views of Lake Michigan, mushroom houses, and a variety of different landmarks.

6. Side Walk Cruising
The downtown Charlevoix loop is a classic for runners and walkers. Beginning in East Park, winding along the Marina sidewalks and down the pier to the Charlevoix lighthouse, this popular trail is a community staple. This loop not only has great views, it’s also a low-impact route. This one-mile loop gives you the chance to experience some of Charlevoix’s finest sights.

Whichever path you choose, runners can experience a wide array of challenging trails and wonderful views. Get off the beaten path and discover Charlevoix!
