Winter Vacation

We wanted to take a moment to dispel some of the misconceptions often associated with winter in Charlevoix. We sometimes get questions like: Is there anything to do in the winter? Are the shops and restaurants open? Are the hotels open? Can you go outside in the winter? The answer to all these questions is most definitely YES!

Northern Michigan’s winters are beautiful with fresh powder, crisp nights, and dancing skies. Restaurants offer a more laid-back vibe during the snowy season, and shops offer great discounts. Accommodations are more affordable, so it makes taking an extra day off work and staying an extra night tempting. We’re highlighting some of our favorite ways to experience the snowy season in Charlevoix.

Candlelight Hikes
We can’t say enough good things about the candlelight hikes at Mt. McSauba. They happen every Friday from 5-8 pm until February 25th. This mile-long loop is a family fun activity that is free and something you should add to your bucket list!

Cross Country Ski, Snowshoe, or Fat Tire Bike
We’re all about trying new things. Charlevoix is the perfect place to try a new winter sport or simply explore the winter trails. We love renting a fat tire bike from Revolution Bike and heading out to Fisherman’s Island State Park. Take your snowshoes or cross country skis to Driggers Nature Preserve for an easy hike or explore numerous other great trails at area preserves.

Imbibe an Adult Beverage
Winter is the perfect time for an adult beverage. Whether visiting Bier’s Inwood Brewery, checking out the Vue, or sitting in an igloo at Hotel Earl, winter is the perfect time to enjoy the ambiance of a fire and have a good beverage.

Look for the Northern Lights
Every once in a while, you can catch the Aurora Borealis dancing across the night sky. This one takes some planning and radar watching, but it’s truly spectacular if you get a chance to see the lights dancing across the nighttime skyscape. And moe dark hours of winter give better opportunity to catch a glimpse.

Watch the Sunset
There’s something quite breathtaking about a winter sunset. Maybe it’s the sparkling ice and snow or maybe it’s something else altogether. But the blazing winter sunsets are not to be missed.

Hit the slopes
Did you know Charlevoix is centrally located to many of the major ski hills in Northern Michigan? Whichever hill strikes your fancy, you are close to all of them! Plus, you can enjoy a discounted rate on your lodging. If you’re traveling with the kiddos, take them to Mt. McSauba. It’s a great place for them to take lessons or simply enjoy an afternoon at the hill.

Visit the Cultural Corridor
The Charlevoix Circle of Arts, Public Library, and Historical Society offer unique exhibits, classes, lectures, concerts, and workshops throughout the year. Winter is a wonderful time to visit these Charlevoix treasures.

Raft the Jordan
The Jordan River is beautiful all year, but winter on the Jordan is unparalleled. There is something special about the quiet serenity of winter rafting. There are frequent opportunities to see woodland animals and high soaring eagles during the excursions.
