Its hard to believe that after living in Michigan for 12 years that we've never visited. In short it was amazing. We've traveled the world and savor what each place offers whether that be a remote cottage or a fancy hotel in a posh European city. The Highlands threads an interesting needle in that it offers both nature and refinement, seriousness and X-game-ish hoonigan-fun. Located around one of Michigan's largest hills/mountains is a bit of adventure for everyone. With serene golf courses, downhill runs, to zip lines and more I think the Highlands is tailorable for many. We went for downhill mountain biking and loved it. With a 4 minute chairlift ride you're ready for a myriad of trails. My only warning is, their trails are at least one grade higher than everywhere else. I wouldn't recommend this place for first timers unless you're interested in only XC.
In terms of accommodations it was much better than the 1957 facade suggest. The rooms were fancier than anything I've stayed at in the area. It felt more akin to settings you'd find in downtown Chicago or NYC.
For value, I felt our dollar certainly stretched significantly farther compared to nearby attractions like Mackinac Island. The military discount for me was much better than anticipated.
The culinary offerings startled me in a good way. In terms of price it was average, however for a semi-upscale resort it felt like the quality was on the higher end. The Windsor inspired theme intertwined with a lodge woodsy feel was well maintained. With over 5 places to eat throughout the property there's less reason to venture elsewhere.
With decent pool and hot tub one also can just relax. Adjacent was a small pond with free-use boats.
Some other surprising things we found was a 80's type performance dinner (we didn't go), a well stocked snow & bike shop, bike rentals, zip line adventures and more. And the overall location is just a short drive away from many nearby sights.
I'm sure I am missing something. I guess I'll leave that for my next visit. And lastly, the staff was friendly and helpful. It didn't feel like there were many of them compared to other places, but it didn't hinder anything.
Great job Highlands! You've certainly earned a repeat visit from us.
