Depot 125 in Charlevoix Michigan

The Charlevoix Historical Society is inviting all members of the community, the immediate area, and everyone in Northern Michigan to a celebration of the 125th anniversary of the coming of the railroad and the construction of Charlevoix's historic Train Depot. Charlevoix was the last of the major northern Michigan communities to receive rail service.  The first Chicago & West Michigan Railway train pulled up to an almost finished Depot at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 1892, an event that changed the town, especially the travel and resort picture here, immediately and forever.

Depot 125: An 1892 Experience – “Family Gala” celebration will take place on Sunday, June 25th between 12 and 5 pm at the Depot, Depot Beach on Lake Charlevoix. The event will transport guests back to 1892, where they will be immersed in what was happening both locally and nationally. The arrival of the railroad in Charlevoix was celebrated with parades, bands, bicycle races, boat races, and other activities which entertained 10,000 visitors from all over the area.

Featured in the Family Gala on June 25th will be music by the Charlevoix City Band, state champion barbershop quartet, "Upper Deck", from Big Rapids, guided tours of the Depot interspersed with short “historic passenger” skits performed by members of the Charlevoix Circle of Arts, rides on the Castle Farms model train, horse-drawn carriage rides, children's activities and much, much more. Photographic opportunities galore. Vintage dress optional and there is no admission charge. Food and refreshments will be available.

On Monday, June 26th, there will be a Proclamation Ceremony at 2:00 pm in the Depot Heritage Garden, with officials from the State of Michigan and the City of Charlevoix on hand to mark the actual time the first train arrived and celebrate 125 years of preserving the Train Depot.
