4th of July

June has flown by and we’re fast approaching the 4th of July and a long holiday weekend. While celebrating our nation’s independence, here are some of the ways we are going to celebrate this year:

  1. Water Life
The fourth of July is the ultimate water weekend, and there is no better place to be on or near the water than Charlevoix. Did you know Charlevoix is an isthmus (a narrow strip of land bordered by water)? Whether you choose, Lake Michigan, Lake Charlevoix, or Round Lake, you can enjoy the absolute best of Pure Michigan. If you’re looking for adventure, try paddling the Jordan River. It’s simply awesome, but if you are a beginner, we suggest taking a guided raft trip. However, you choose to enjoy all of Charlevoix’s water, our pristine and expansive lakes are a must.
  2. Get Outdoors and Explore
Nothing beats exploring somewhere new. Take the time to visit all of the beautiful nature scapes in Charlevoix.  Explore the windswept beaches and rustic trails of Fisherman’s Island State Park, take in the views at Charles Ransom Nature Preserve, play a round of disc golf at the Mt. McSauba Recreation Area, or enjoy an easy loop at the Susan Creek Nature Preserve. There’s a path for everyone.
  3. Downtown
Downtown Charlevoix is quaint yet vibrant. There’s a great variety of stores featuring children’s toys and apparel, men's and women’s clothing, Michigan and Charlevoix-themed gifts and items, cherry delights, gourmet jams and jellies, old-time taffy and treats, unique artwork, and so much more are just waiting for you. Be sure to watch the drawbridge while you're downtown as well!
  4. Quirky Architecture and Historic Charm
Mushroom houses, enough said. Take a tour (whether self-guided or a guided gem car tour), you’ll be entertained and awestruck by the unique and quirky designs of Earl Young. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Castle Farms. This historic Renaissance-style castle is an iconic part of Charlevoix’s history. Step back in time and explore the beauty of this gorgeous castle. Also, stop into 1918 Cellars and Bistro to try some tasty food and wine.
  5. Waves of Purple
Stop, enjoy the fragrance, and take in the purple splendor at Lavender Hill Farm. The fields of flowers are simply beautiful and so relaxing. Be sure to visit the gift shop for lots of great lavender-themed treats and products.
  6. Bon Appetite
There are so many wonderful restaurants in town. Visit the new The Argonne House for shrimp, Villager Pub for whitefish, check out the Bridge Street Tap Room for Michigan craft beer or enjoy the best view at Stafford’s Weathervane. We can’t fit every restaurant in this blog but click here to learn more about great area dining options. If you’re looking for breakfast recommendations, check out this blog (We take breakfast very seriously here at Visit Charlevoix).
  7. Have a Glass or Pint
It’s no secret that Michigan has lots of great wineries, distilleries, and breweries. Be sure to take a wine tour of the Petoskey Wine Region. Visit Bier’s Inwood Brewery for terrific beer, live music, and pizza. Try Royal Farms for delicious cider and countryside views. Stop at 1918 Cellars and Bistro while touring the Castle. There are simply so many great choices. Click here to learn more.
  8. Sweet Treats
If you've visited our blog before, you know we love sweets, if you haven't now you know who to ask. We are addicted to ice cream and we can’t stop visiting Dairy Grille, Kilwins, and Celeste Murdick’s Fudge. If you like fudge, we have that too. Pick a flavor any flavor. If you want a great chocolate chip cookie stop by That French Place (you will thank us later). For a classic and delicious doughnut, Friske's Farm Market can't be missed.
  9. Hit the Links
Charlevoix is home to some of the Midwest's most notable golf, from a nine-hole historic municipal course to the prestigious course that has hosted the Michigan Amateur. Regardless of your budget or skill level, you'll be sure to find a course to satisfy your golfing itch!
  10. Million Dollar Sunsets
There’s nothing quite like a Lake Michigan sunset. Check out our Instagram to see what you’ve been missing. Our sunsets are the very definition of a million-dollar sunset. You never know what colors will be featured each night.
  11. Fireworks
Celebrate the 4th of July with lots of great fireworks shows! You can find a complete listing of 4th of July celebrations here
